Is Daphne’s Comeback Song a Flop, Her New Music Isn’t idiosyncratic To Music Lovers Today

Is Daphne’s Comeback Song “La Bas” a Flop? Some days ago, Daphne makes a return to the music scene after a lengthy hiatus. Daphne has been off the scene for about a year now and with her last single/solo almost 3 years ago. Over the years, we’ve seen our favorite celebrities take well-deserved breaks, but their comeback becomes totally worth the wait!

Before Daphne made her space in Cameroon music with her first track in 2013, females in the industry were not dominating. Yet It worked for her and Rastafari became a Hit. Followed by Calee, and she has continued to build a solid pool of extraordinary records.

Why did Steven’s Music Entertainment LLC (which has proven to be a Superstar manufacturing label) sign Daphne to the Record label? Maybe it is because she’s the most marketable female artist in Cameroon, bagging endorsement here and there. When you think Daphne, you think of Tiwa Savage and Rihanna, yes she’s that BIG.

Most female artists have great voices but they are not sexy enough, while some are sexy without the voice.  But Daphne has both, with her killer curves, a very attractive smile, and well-polished skin tone. She became one of the most popular, and one of the most viewed Cameroonian Artist On YouTube With 30M+views. Which made her supportive fans give her the title QUEEN OF CAMEROON POP MUSIC.

Now, the Cameroon music industry is saturated with a lot of females dripping in sexiness.  For example, Blanche Bailly, Nabila, MIMIE, etc. The question is, Can Daphne, one of Cameroon’s biggest female Afro-Pop singer make a return to the number 1 spot which has been dominated by her rivals?

Daphne is unarguably one of the biggest female Popstars in the present-day music business with several hit songs. Like  Rastafari, Gunshot, Mother’s love, Allez, Ndolo, Calee, Promet Moi, Jusqu’a la Gare, My Lover. Released back to back, not leaving out the numerous shows, concerts and performances delivered both home and abroad.

Daphne in her live session said she lost her voice. But because of her fans and husband, she is regaining her voice to get back into the music industry. And now with the release of her recent single, we think she is fully back. “Là Bas”, a love song about missing the one you love, we hope it was worth the wait and the comeback we all were waiting for. One Year, No Music From Daphne got everyone thinking “Is It Over or Just a Break?”

To say that Daphne hasn’t disappointed any with the pace of her career may well be the understatement of the century. Like most popular artists from the English zone of Cameroon, Daphne has over the years been bashed. Reason been for singing in French and not entirely in English. While others are rising to the trend of singing in English to satisfy the demands of their English-speaking fans: Daphne seems to be adamant to change.

Some Critiques complained that the generation Daphne – Mr. Leo – Salatiel, etc. powered the “FranAnglais” music system.  Where most Anglophones sing mostly in French to target French Cameroonian Fans. Which has helped them gain a lot of French speaking fans and made a a lot of money. But turn a blind eye on those who sang mostly in English.

It isn’t a bad thing to sing in both languages, it created the uniqueness of Cameroonian Urban Music. But the problem was that Super talented artists who sang mostly in English became nugatory. In fact, musically gifted talents like Tzy Panchak, Gasha, Daddy Black, Ngoma, Vernyuy Tina, Awu, Gomez, etc. were glossed over until they started switching sounds to “FranAnglais“.

English is one of the biggest global Languages, bigger than French. And ironically Nigerian Stars (Who sing completely in English) have sold out Arenas in French-Speaking Cameroon. It’s kind of a bias that if you are an Anglophone Cameroonian and you don’t sing in French, you won’t blow, switch your style.

But for over a year now it seems like Cameroonians can old blow out of Africa if they apply more English themes in their lyrics, I mean Salatiel featured in Beyoncé’s album and trended worldwide. He further went on to release an Album (Africa Represented) we can categorize as “critically acclaimed” with more English themes than French. He even went on to perform at AFCON Draws 2021 and wowed soccer legends with his song Ayagayo that has touched music fans all over Africa.

Now let’s go to one of the biggest to ever make it, Mr. Leo, literally did most of his career hit songs more in French than English (Jamais Jamais, Partout, Je Suis Desole, C’est Faux, etc.) but for over a year now he switched making more autochthonous music and has gained massive respect from music connaisseurs – Songs like Zege Zege, Time, Jei Jei has unveiled him closer to world music and he even plans to release an album totally idiosyncratic. Meanwhile, our biggest female star has to remain a carbon copy of her previous releases.

Daphne’s talent can’t be doubted, but her relevance in the music industry is in question at the moment. She needs to tighten her belt and adjust her career if she wants to stay in the game. The multiple award-winning singer just released the audio and stunning visuals for her new single titled “Là Bas“.
