The Mount Cameroon Race of Hope held its 30th run in Buea in 2025, attracting 763 athletes from 12 nations. During the event, runners must climb Mount Cameroon to 4,100 meters. Meanwhile, the route, known as the “Chariot of the Gods,” continues to be famous for its steep slopes and rocky volcanic ground.
In the men’s race, Hussaini Hassan showed great strength to win. Subsequently, Ali Mohammadou took second place. Additionally, in the women’s group, Ngalim Lizette finished first. Furthermore, Seini Adamu’s team won the relay race through smart teamwork.
Moreover, Sarah Liengu Etonge, age 61, won the veterans’ race. Consequently, she proved why people still call her the “Queen of the Mountain.” After she finished, fans shouted “Phombowo, Iya!!” at the finish line. Indeed, her grit keeps inspiring new runners.
However, the race had its problems. For instance, officials had to stop sixteen runners for health reasons. Since the tough race needs runners to be very fit, safety comes first in checking runners’ health.
Unfortunately, the Anglophone crisis has hurt the event since 2016. Then in 2023, bombs hurt 19 runners. After that incident, rebels said they did it. As a result, safety fears still keep some runners and tourists away.
Nevertheless, this year’s theme was clear: “Let’s Give Peace a Chance.” Therefore, the race shows how people can stay strong and come together. In addition, everyone hopes it will help bring peace.
To grow worldwide, the race needs better marketing. For example, more news coverage would help spread the word. Similarly, social media could reach more fans. Besides that, working with other big races could bring top runners. At the same time, better tourism would also help.
