Limbe Refinery Set for 2027 Comeback After Six-Year Shutdown

After six tough years of shutdown, Cameroon’s National Refining Company (SONARA) has finally approved a full plan to restart the Limbe refinery by 2027. This huge decision means much more than just getting back to work—it shows a major shift toward energy freedom and economic growth for the whole nation.
The terrible explosion that happened on Friday, May 31, 2019, at 9:55 pm brought Cameroon’s only oil refining plant to a complete stop. As a result, this situation has forced the country to rely heavily on imported fuel products, creating big economic stress while also increasing risk to global market changes.
However, recent events have sparked new hope throughout the energy sector. The board of directors adopted the Speed-Up Plan for Rebuilding and Repair Measures for Refining Restart within 24 months (PARRAS 24) during their August 13 meeting. This smart move shows the government’s strong commitment to bringing back domestic refining abilities.
The money needs of this big project cannot be ignored. Moreover, the repair project needs major investment, with estimates suggesting costs could go beyond hundreds of billions of Central African francs. Still, international partners have shown strong interest in supporting this crucial infrastructure project.
Furthermore, the SONARA facility repair promises to create many job opportunities across multiple sectors. Engineers who work in chemical, mechanical, and civil areas will find themselves in high demand. Also, project managers, environmental compliance experts, and logistics coordinators will play key roles in the rebuilding process.
The 42,000 barrels per day capacity facility originally processed light crude oil and will undergo major upgrades during the repair phase. After that, these improvements will allow the refinery to handle heavier crude types that Cameroon currently produces, thereby fixing the previous mismatch between available resources and processing abilities.
Cameroon’s national refiner is targeting a 2027 restart of its long-closed 42,000 bpd refinery after approving a 24-month repair plan. This timeline, while bold, reflects the urgency with which authorities are approaching this critical infrastructure project.
Regional energy security will surely benefit from the successful return of refining operations. In addition, the facility’s comeback will help stabilize fuel prices for consumers while reducing dependence on expensive imported oil products. The broader Gulf of Guinea region will also gain from increased refining capacity within its borders.
Environmental concerns remain very important throughout the planning process. After that, engineers will build modern safety rules and cleaner fuel standards into the facility’s upgraded systems. These improvements will ensure long-term sustainability while meeting international environmental requirements.
The economic effects extend far beyond the oil sector itself. Local suppliers, transportation companies, and construction firms will experience increased business opportunities as the project moves forward. Meanwhile, the surrounding Limbe community expects big economic benefits from the refinery’s return to full operation.
International partnerships continue to develop as the project gains speed. Various financial institutions from multiple countries have expressed interest in providing funding solutions for this massive project. These joint efforts highlight the project’s importance not only for Cameroon but for regional energy infrastructure development.
Technical challenges linked to updating aging equipment require creative solutions and expertise. Therefore, SONARA has engaged international contractors with proven experience in refinery repair projects. This smart approach ensures that the facility will meet modern operational standards upon completion.
The successful implementation of PARRAS 24 will position Cameroon as a stronger player in West Africa’s energy landscape. Ultimately, this transformation will contribute to greater economic stability and energy independence for the nation’s growing population.
Looking ahead, the 2027 target date represents more than just a timeline—it symbolizes Cameroon’s determination to overcome past setbacks and emerge stronger in the global energy market. The combination of government commitment, international support, and technical expertise provides a solid foundation for achieving this bold goal.
