The controversy-laced tournament opened with the hosts outplayed and embarrassed in a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador. Earning Qatar the unwanted title of the first hosting nation in the cup’s 92-year history to lose its opening game, according to NPR. This happened in front of 67,372 fans at Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar.
In 92 years of soccer’s biggest event, a host team had never lost its opening game. The World Cup opened Sunday with Qatar getting outplayed and embarrassed in a 2-0 loss to Ecuador.
The both nations will have to face recent AFCON winners Senegal and three times world cup finalist Netherlands.
