From Cameroon to the White House; Meet Evelyn Chumbow
Everybody chasing the American Dream has high aspirations and ambitious goals. Evelyn Chumbow left Cameroon 25 years ago, hoping for a better education and a brighter future in the U.S. Instead, she was forced to cook, clean, and care for her guardian’s young children without pay. Enslaved and abused for eight years, she lost all contact with her family and never attended school.
As Pastor Charles R. Swindoll said, “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” Evelyn defied all odds and transformed her life. Today, she is a renowned anti-trafficking activist fighting for survivors worldwide. In 2015, President Barack Obama nominated her to the United States Advisory Council on Human Trafficking. As a council member, she advises the President’s Interagency Task Force to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons (PITF).
Evelyn also works as a Project Assistant at Baker McKenzie, the world’s largest law firm. She serves as an ambassador for the ICE Foundation’s Granting Courage Initiative, which supports human trafficking survivors. She has been featured in New York’s New Abolitionists, a book highlighting individuals committed to ending human trafficking.
Today, Evelyn is a fearless and dynamic activist featured on CNN, BBC, and ABC. She travels the world, sharing her story and advocating for survivors. A devoted mother, she inspires millions worldwide.
