The Ministry of Decentralisation and Local Development (MINDEL) is said to have been allocated a whooping sum of 100 billion FCFA from the national budget of the 2024 fiscal year, meaning an impressive increase of 20% against the previous year. The increment is poised to emphasize the government of Cameroon’s commitment and dedication to strengthening the process of decentralization, empowering, and developing local communities.
According to Mimi Mefo info, MINDEL’s budget allocation aims at strengthening three major sectors within its jurisdiction which are local Governance, infrastructural development, and local economic development.
MINDEL plans to fund programs that enable regional communities to recognize and take advantage of their own assets and opportunities. This entails developing micro- and small-business development, raising agricultural productivity, and putting in place locally-specific skill-training initiatives.
The budget will give priority to building and renovating necessary infrastructure in semi-urban and rural areas. The purpose of these infrastructure projects is to improve access to essential services and promote local economic growth. These projects include roads, bridges, markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.
Funds will be allocated to local government officials and civil servants’ capacity building. The objective is to foster active citizen participation in decision-making processes while improving accountability and transparency mechanisms.
However, Cameroonians are familiar with the word “Easier said than done” and are now expecting things to be done differently this time as per the previous years.
