Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96, according to Buckingham Palace. Her death brings to a close a reign that spanned seven decades and made her the most recognized woman in the world. No official details have been released about what will happen over the coming days.
Crowds have gathered outside Windsor Castle to grieve the death of their Queen, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the II. In a statement from Buckingham Palace:
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
The British royal family’s official website carries the memorandum: “Queen Elizabeth II 1926-2022”. Her Eldest child, Prince Charles, 73, is now king.
After a brief illness, her health declined and she died just two days after performing her constitutional duty by appointing Liz Truss as the fifteen prime minister of England.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow,” Buckingham Palace said.
As monarch, the Queen is automatically granted a publicly funded state funeral. Details for the funeral are expected to be released by the palace soon.
Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and the world’s oldest head of state.
