The indomitable lions of Cameroon first choice goalkeeper Andre Onana, faced a suspension yesterday prior to their second group stage game against Serbia which ended with a 3-3 draw. Onana who was replaced by second-choice goalkeeper Devis Epassy for the game against Serbia, had a dispute with Head coach Rigobert Song that led to his temporal suspension. However, reports have it that, despite the efforts put in by both parties in an attempt to settle their differences for the sake of their country Cameroon, they couldn’t reach an amicable settlement which led to Andre Onana’s final decision to quit the lion’s den, exit the world cup and exit Doha for Milan to join his club.
Before heading to the airport, Onana decided to clear the air. Below is what he had to say
“I want to express my affection for my country and the national team. Yesterday I was not allowed to be on the ground to help Cameroon as I always do, to achieve the team’s goals. I’ve always behaved in a way to lead the team to success in a good manner.
I put all my efforts and energy into finding solutions to a problem that a footballer often experiences, but there has been no will on the other side. Some moments are difficult to assimilate. However, I always respect the decisions of the people in charge of pursuing the success of our team and country.
I extend all my strength to my teammates, because we demonstrated that we can go very far in this competition.
The values I promote as an individual and as a player are the ones that identify me, and that my family has given me since my childhood. Representing Cameroon has always been a privilege. The nation first and forever! Thank you!”
The indomitable lions of Cameroon will have to continue the rest of their FIFA world cup journey without their first choice goalkeeper.
